The Mission House Band (around 1920). Photo courtesy of Gene Jaberg. A family photo from 1934. I am 7, on the far left, then Dad, then 3-year-old Ruth (another MHC grad), Vernon and my mother. She grew up about 1 mile from MH on the Stuckmann farm. Dad was a minister in Linton, Indiana and that’s where this was taken. Photo courtesy of Gene Jaberg. At age 16 (really!) I was hired as a staff announcer at WHBL radio. Because management thought (wrongly, of course) that they needed only male voices and the draft was taking them, I got the nod. For me it was the start of a long career in TV and radio—Sheboygan, Madison (WHA Radio and WKOW-TV); Minneapolis (KTCA-TV as a freelance performer). I continued working at the WHBL throughout my days at Lakeland-MHC (1943-55 with Army service & education interrupting). Photo courtesy of Gene Jaberg. A bunch of us with an old buggy (Carl Mohr on the right, me on the left). Photo courtesy of Gene Jaberg. I was a point guard for the Muskies. As a freshman, I scored a winning basket in the last minute of a game with Northwestern (Watertown, WI). The story made the Milwaukee Journal. So I had a moment in the sun! Photo courtesy of Gene Jaberg. Another good memory. In 1946-47, I was given the Hauser-Kuplic Award for outstanding varsity athlete. I had a good year as football quarterback as well as basketball and track. Photo courtesy of Gene Jaberg. Our basketball team of 1946. Coaches were Marinus Kregel and Ruben Grosshuesch. Front row: Alan Barz, me, Nels Hauptman, Howard Beer, Carroll Olm, Henry Heinbuch and Carl Mohr. Photo courtesy of Gene Jaberg. Returning from a win over Milwaukee UW Extension, we were caught in a sudden blizzard in Racine. In any case, all hotels were booked so our team ended up in jail. This picture shows Coach Kregel just waking up from a tough night on metal bunks without mattresses. Photo courtesy of Gene Jaberg. The next morning we tried to push a stuck streetcar. (L to R): Carl Mohr, me, Carroll Olm and Linus Wierwille. Photo courtesy of Gene Jaberg. Same day: Me and Cal Grosshuesch. We were “The Dirty Two,” racking up more personal fouls than the “Big Three”—our big scorers: Van Ess, Olm and Wierwille. Cal finished college at U. Northern Iowa and was on the team that is, today, frequently in the NCAA tournament. Photo courtesy of Gene Jaberg. Two girls from Honduras (1947-48): Enriqueta and Blanca Bustillo. They were directed to Mission House by MHC alumnus Harold Auler, a missionary. Photo courtesy of Gene Jaberg. A scene from a Campus Player’s production of Jane Eyre. I was really too young for the role of Rochester, but Joy Willadson was very convincing as Jane. Others: Jean Towsy, Cliff Voll, Art Koshewa and Jean Marie Meier. Photo courtesy of Gene Jaberg. Carl Mohr and I spent the summer of 1948 at Breezy Point Lodge, Minnesota’s premier resort. We were bell hops and had a great time. Occasionally I would croon with the Kiki Orchat Orchestra from Chicago. Photo courtesy of Gene Jaberg. A close-up of me taken at a campfire at Breezy. Photo courtesy of Gene Jaberg.
