150 years ago, in a tiny building on donated land, Lakeland College began with only a handful of students as Mission House. Over time, enrollment increased, buildings were built and torn down, academic and athletic programs were developed and Mission House grew to become the Lakeland College we know today.
Along the way, there were plenty of milestones: presidents, first female and foreign exchange students, sports and arts programs and so much more. And during that time, the college amassed rooms full of photos, glass slides, old equipment, pieces of buildings, uniforms and so on - each tied to specific events at Lakeland College.
We have brought together some of these memories and paired them with the major events they represent on a chronological timeline to tell the story of Lakeland from beginning to end.
Obviously we couldn't include every milestone, but the timeline highlights some of the major events and people from each decade. Each entry is its own story, signifying a beginning, or an end; a happy time, or sad tragedy; they are memories for some, and something new for others.
This is the history of Lakeland College - and it is only the beginning.

As an added bonus, we have two support joists pulled out of Old Main in the 1990s and signed by numerous students over time. Use our magnifier tool to see if you recognize any of the names.
And, of course, thank you for celebrating our history with us. Enjoy!
