Freezing Up Old Main

About 1940-41, looking for trouble, a few freshman and sophomore boys (we called them boys in those days), dressed in winter coats, hats and gloves and, in the dark of one cold night, stole into Main Hall. Once there, they turned off all of the radiators and, from the inside of that classroom building, locked all the windows and doors.

The ensuing morning, no one could get into the building. When they finally did, the rooms were cold and the radiators frozen. No classes that day. Interesting enough, the culprits were never known and thus received no punishments.

My hunch is that the frozen pipes were enough to frighten the guilty parties into silence forever. At least after that, Main Hall had new locks and was secured at night. In those days, there were no around-the-clock custodians.

You can understand why the writer of this tale remains anonymous.
